In 1859, John H. Gregory found a vein of gold. The area near by was found to have many other gold veins in the rocks. It became known as the 'Richest Square Mile on Earth.' Soon, a town was established to support the miners. With all of the people and all of the money, the town of Central City became known for it's gambling and fine restaurants and hotels. Doc Holiday and Poker Alice, were known to frequent the casinos. People that visited would stay at the Teller House if they were able to afford the 'finest between Chicago and San Francisco.'
Today there are still fine dining and hotel establishments and elegant casinos like the Crystal Palace. Most of the casinos are in historic buildings. There are tours in the summer to learn more.
In 1877 the Central City Opera House was built. The Central City Opera House Company still holds operas and concerts in the summer time. Be sure to see one of the world class operas while you are there.
There are many historic trails, cemetery tours, and mine tours available to learn more about the historic area. While you are outside be on the look out for the abundant wild life, and enjoy the views of the mountains.
