In 1968, Nathaniel P. Hill developed the first successful ore smelter. It made it possible to get the gold out of the hard rock ore that was in the surrounding mountains. This brought great wealth to the area; with it came hotels and magnificent casinos. This town is called Black Hawk.
Today, Black Hawk's historic main street let's us see what the street would have looked like. The new large modern casinos are around the corner. Come enjoy the dining, shopping, and pampering in the large hotels.
With the North Fork of Clear Creek running through town and being right in the middle of the mountains, be sure to spend some time outside. Highway 119 is part of the Peak to Peak Highway. There are breathtaking views all along this roadway that will take you all the way up to Rocky Mountain National Park. If you are into bicycling, the Great Parks Bicycle Route goes right through town.
